WildlifeIf you love wildlife in general and birds in particular, Alcaig Cottages will be perfect for you. The
cottages have stunning views across the tidal Cromarty Firth which
means you can set up your spotting scope in the comfort of your own
lounge! We regurlarly see, either over or in the
Firth, Otters,
Ospreys,
Red Kite, Buzzards.
Not to mention the huge number of geese, gulls and
waders that winter here.
The Black Isle has some fabulous wildlife, some of which you're almost certain to see, such as Seals and Red Squirrels, and others which are much more elusive, such as Pine Marten (which we do sometimes get here in the grounds) and Scottish Wildcats. Alcaig Cottages are also just a few minutes away from Chanonry Point, which is one of the best places in Europe to see Bottle-Nosed Dolphins. The ease of access to the West Coast from Alcaig Cottages, means opportunities to see Golden Eagles, White-tailed Sea Eagles, Black and Red Throated Divers and on the journey there you're likely to see Red Deer. A boat trip from Gairloch or Ullapool will allow you the chance to see whales or take a trip to the magical Handa Island to see nesting Great Skuas, Fulmars and Puffins. As wildlife-lovers ourselves, we encourage wildlife in the grounds with feeders and nest boxes and take pride in the variety of species you will encounter around the cottages.
Clockwise from top left: Pine Marten at Alcaig Cottages, Osprey, Cromarty Firth Common Seal, Male Ptarmigan, Bottle-nosed Dolphin in the Moray Firth, Snow Bunting, Roe Deer at Alcaig Cottages, Buzzard at Alcaig Cottages. |
